Back to TopWhat is water-sewer, drain backup coverage? Will your homeowners insurance cover this?
Fall and spring tend to be our wettest seasons making our homes most susceptible to the backup of sewer or drain lines. While these events don’t occur often, when they do, the problem can be a small disaster. Did you know a standard homeowner’s insurance policy excludes coverage for such an event?
It’s true. The backup of sewer and drains as well as the failure of a sump pump is excluded.
Heavy rains can trigger a backup. A storm sewer or sanitary sewer back up into your home usually comes in through a sump well, washtubs, in basement, or toilets in the basement. However, the damage can happen anywhere in the house. Sump pump failures normally occur from power outages or motor failures.
The damage can be quite costly. Normally damage occurs in the basement, which houses the mechanical systems of the house such as washer and dryer, furnace, hot water tank and the numerous items people store there. For the thousands of dollars in damage, it would be well worth purchasing the additional coverage with your homeowner’s policy to cover such an event.
Most insurance companies have a 30 day waiting period to add this coverage to an existing policy. However, some companies will waive the waiting period if purchased the same time you purchase the policy.
Back to TopDo I really need Uninsured and Underinsured Motorist Coverage?Uninsured or underinsured motorist coverage can pay for injuries to you and your passengers, when there is an accident and the other driver is both legally responsible for the accident and considered “uninsured” (no coverage) or “underinsured”(not enough coverage). Your coverage could help to pay, medical bills, disability, and loss of wages for you and your passengers
Back to TopWhat is a Personal Umbrella?Personal umbrella insurance provides coverage beyond your homeowner or auto policy by adding an extra layer of liability coverage. Coverage is provided in amounts of $1,000,000 increments. Umbrella insurance also covers situations that may not be covered by another policy such as slander or libel.
How does it work?
Example:
Coverage: you have liability insurance on your auto policy for $100,000. You also have additional liability protection through umbrella coverage of $1,000,000.
Incident: On the way home from work, you run a red light and accidentally hit a biker. The biker is seriously injured and sues you for damages of $500,000. The court finds you liable for the full amount.
Result: The liability on your auto policy pays the first $100,000. Once depleted, your umbrella policy pays the final $400,000.
If you had not been protected with the additional liability coverage, you personally would have been responsible for the other $400,000 in claims against you.
Back to TopWhen to add youthful Operator. Most companies will not charge for newly permitted driver. Once completed the training, and upon receiving their permanent license, the youthful operator should be added to the auto policy.
